You are unbelievable, this absolutely works. Sometimes even if you are not aware of exact solution, trial and error methods does the job, but for that you need to have a basic knowledge to what you are dealing with.

D'oh! I have used that before but I didn't realize that "Alert" appearance were "translucent". And I didn't realized that because my background was full black!

I set the appearance of the keyboard to "Alert". You can do this in the xib or in code with setKeyboardAppearance:UIKeyboardAppearanceAlert.

In case of a Universal iOS app use the following keys in the info.plist file (see attached image):

Icon file : icon.png (to specify the icon (57x57) for iPhone)
and Icon Files : icon-72.png (to specify the icon (72x72) for ipad)

I was facing the same problem with my iphone.But later i figured out that it was actually from alpha channels thats why my cell phone was not allowing them.

Make sure you've added the icon-file to your target.

1. Two-finger click on the icon.
2. Choose "Get Info"
3. Select tab "Targets"
4. Add icon to target by checking the target.

Mine too! I was trying everything to make Xcode accept my icons and finally I did some googling, came across your article, and just used the default icon names you listed.
